Wow, what an exciting time it’s been in the Garden Route these past few weeks!
The much-anticipated Knysna Oyster Festival has been and gone, and what a successful event it was. Oysters were slurped, champagne was chugged and a jolly good time was had by all. |

|
|
| While the stars of the show were certainly the deep-sea delicacies on offer, many a winner emerged during the course of the festival, as its renowned sporting events attracted thousands of participants from around the country. The headlining outdoor event – the Pick n Pay Cape Times Knysna Forest Marathon – drew about 9,000 entries, and saw the Garden Route transformed into a grand-scale athletics meeting! |

Just because the Oyster Fest is over doesn’t mean that things are quietening down here in the Garden Route! In fact, we’re just warming up! Now that the winter solstice has passed, we’re on the downhill slide to summer, and things are already heating up with plenty of great events and festivals coming up in August. After the excitement of the Oyster Fest, the Klein Karoo Klassique keeps the momentum going in the gorgeous town of Oudtshoorn from 4-7 August 2011. This fantastic cultural festival features classical music, wine and art, and delectable Klein Karoo dishes.
Enjoy the rich flavours of local cuisine and fines wine while taking in the sounds of string quartets, pianists, capello choirs and wind instruments – with the highlight of the weekend being the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra. For patrons of the arts and connoisseurs of fine food and wine, this spectacular event is not to be missed.

The NRL Wines Trade Show will be held later in the month, from 19-21 August, right here in George. The event showcases a variety of wines from the Garden Route, and also features a dinner with the winemakers, various food and sushi stalls, and an array of performances by top local artists and bands.

|
Other great events taking place in George in August are the Garden Route Wedding Exhibition, from 20-22 August, the Gourmets and Gourmands Culinary Festival on 27 August, and the second Tramonto Wedding Run on 27 August.
The Wedding Exhibition – considered Southern Africa’s premier bridal expo – is always well worth a visit, particularly as the Garden Route is such a spectacular location for a wedding. With so many popular events happening in George this month, it’s a great time to spend a few days in our neck of the woods. Bring your family, friends or that someone special and enjoy one of our modern chalets, each of which is fully equipped, cosy and newly renovated. |

Don’t forget that for golf nuts, there are plenty of fantastic greens in George – after all, our town is considered one of the golf capitals of South Africa! Why not make it a sporting weekend and tee off at Oubaai, Kingswood or even the magnificent Fancourt?
