It’s been a disappointing few weeks for South African sports fans, but here in the Garden Route we’ve been distracting ourselves with the biggest golf event of the year, sadly it will not take place in George this year, but none the less. We love Golf!

The Gary Player Invitational is South Africa’s most prestigious pro-celebrity charity golf event, and months of planning go into creating the perfect golf event for the 32 top participants and invited guests.

The Garden Route is, after all, one of the country’s leading golf destinations, and a number of the world’s best courses are to be found in George, Knynsa, Plettenberg Bay and Mossel Bay. Courses such as Kingswood, Fancourt, Pezula, Oubaai and George Country Club offer breathtaking views, magnificent fairways and some of the most luxurious amenities imaginable.

However, there are a few other upcoming events worth mentioning – and even though they may be a little while away, we all know how quickly this year has flown.

October Events in George and the Garden Route

For any of you lucky enough to have received an invitation to the Gary Play Invitational, you’ll know that it takes place from 10-13 November 2011 in Kwazulu Natal, at a course designed by the Black Knight himself.

For those not lucky enough to attend, why not visit us here in George for a round of Golf? You will be pleased to know that we still have accommodation available at our charming lodge!

Another great golfing event coming up is the Ultimate Golfing Road Trip, hosted by Golf in the Garden Route, which runs from 5-11 February 2012. Take up the challenge and play 9 courses in 7 days! Alternatively, book one of the daily golf packages available.

It includes some of the country’s top golf courses, such as Pezula, Goose Valley, Oubaai, Kingswood and more, and it’s going to be an incredible adventure for any golf nut. You can find out more about the Ultimate Golfing Road Trip on the Golf in the Garden Route website.

On a completely different note, wine lovers will be given the opportunity to experience the 2011 Veritas winners without having to purchase each one of them, with the Veritas Awards 2011 Knysna Tastings.

On 16 November 2011, Kilzers Kitchen in Knysna will be hosting a dinner where each of the winning varietals will be available for tasting, while on 17 November, a tasting session featuring wine and snacks will take place. You can book your tickets online at Computicket.

Over ‘n out

I’ve mentioned a number of the region’s top golf courses in this newsletter, but the reality is that many of them are out of reach to most local players, given the costs associated with playing a round.

That’s why we’ve created our Stay and Play packages in conjunction with Golf in the Garden Route, which give our guests access to these top clubs at seriously reduced rates. I encourage you to check out these fantastic packages and to take advantage of those that appeal to you. It’s been a long year – why not treat yourself to an awesome golf getaway?

Don’t forget to like us on Facebook and to follow us on Twitter to stay up to date with the latest events happening in and around the Garden Route. We love to receive your feedback, so please find us online and let us know what’s on your mind!

Until next time, enjoy the fruits of the Garden Route
