The first month of spring was a busy one here in the Garden Route, as locals and visitors alike ushered in the milder weather with a host of culinary and outdoor events.

It really brought summer cheer to the air, and we’re looking forward to plenty more events that celebrate good food, good weather and great company!

October, meanwhile, is the month of ghosts, ghouls and gremlins! It’s also the month of the Full Moon Midnight Run, so it’s clearly an interesting time to be in the Garden Route. There are a number of unique events taking place here, and they’re definitely worth attending if you’re going to be visiting the area.
We’re also gearing up for wedding season! Spring and summer are exceptionally popular times for weddings in the Garden Route. In fact, the Garden Route is one of South Africa’s top wedding destinations – hardly surprising given its superb weather and stunning scenery.

October Events in George and the Garden Route
Runners and cyclists, once again there’s plenty going on in the Garden Route this month.

This past weekend we kicked off with the Naturally Knysna Trail Run on Sunday, which was run over either 10km or a bit longer 14km trail run, what a great reason it was to dust off those running shoes. Well done to all those who took part, it was an amazing day!

Once you’ve warmed up with the trail run, you’ll be ready for the Full Moon Midnight Run on 8 October at Chandelier Game Lodge in Oudtshoorn. Choose from 15km, 25km or 45km race – and although the distances seem short, don’t be fooled! The terrain is rocky and challenging, due to heavy rains, and the race offers a good test to both competitive and social runners.

MTB enthusiasts have two great races to look forward to. The first is the Slow Living Baviaans Mountain Bike Tour in Baviaanskloof starting on 3 October. This 5-day MTB tour winds its way through the breathtaking Baviaanskloof, and offers a super adventure to the recreational cyclist who wishes to take in spectacular scenery and nature while participating in an exciting MTB race.

The second MTB event is the DCM Cape Pioneer Trek on 17 October, an exhilarating race that begins in Oudtshoorn and follows a path by legendary adventurer, Katot Meyer. Considered to be one of the Southern Cape’s best kept cycling secrets, this route traverses two mountain ranges, crosses the arid Karoo and winds through the lush forests of the Garden Route.

Lastly, for those seeking a slightly different type of sports entertainment, the Battle of the Point – Fight Night is bound to offer riveting viewing! Taking place on 15 October in Mossel Bay, this charity cage fighting event also features dancing, modelling shows and various other performances.
