Upcoming events in George and the Garden Route
You surely won’t be surprised to discover that there are a number of high-energy sports events and fun outdoor activities taking place this spring in the Garden Route. There’s simply no better time or place to enjoy the country’s beautiful outdoors!

The Honey Trail MTB race takes place from 9-11 September and runs from Mossel Bay to Plett, with overnight stays in George and Knysna. The 260km route will stay south of the Outeniqua Mountains, and entrants are able to choose their race packages and add partners to their accommodation.

Next up is the fantastic week-long Plett Festival, previously known as the Whiskey, Whales and Jazz Festival, which makes the most of the mild spring weather in the Garden Route. The event features some of the country’s top jazz musicians, and other attractions include whiskey tastings, exciting whale safaris, sports events and a golf day at the spectacular Goose Valley Golf Course. The festival runs from 18-26 September.

The Outeniqua Country Hop Strawberry Festival is one of the most beloved family events in George, if not the whole of the Garden Route. It is no wonder that each year thousands of visitors flock to Redberry Farm in Geelhoutboom to enjoy the delectable pickings and great entertainment on offer.

From 23-24 September, enjoy an array of farm stalls, local wines and cheeses, arts and crafts and entertainment for all ages. Live bands, a scarecrow-building competition and dog shows are just a few of the other fun events on offer.

Once again, one of the country’s top 10 MTB races returns to the Garden Route: The Talisman Herald Karoo to Coast 100km MTB Challenge takes place on 25 September in the gorgeous town of Knysna. Not for the uninitiated, this race offers a superb challenge to seasoned riders.

Finally, we end off the first month of spring with Gastronomica 2011, featuring lip-smacking treats and drinks, entertainment for the kids, and workshops and talks by those who’ve made notable contributions to the food and hospitality industry. Held in Knysna, the event is an absolute must for all food fanatics.
