It’s an exceptionally exciting time for our little town, and preparations are already well under way for the event of the year. |
With our official birthday taking place on 23rd April, it’s fitting that the programme of events kicks off this month, with four festival weekends planned. A fantastic street parade will also be taking place mid-month, followed by a glamorous gala evening where we’ll officially mark our 200th birthday. |
Most of the events will be offered free of charge, thus encouraging as many people as possible to attend. The aim of the birthday celebrations is to be inclusive of all residents of the town, and to involve everyone in the excitement and festivities on offer. Over the coming months, related events will take place throughout the town, so that we can really extend the party atmosphere for as long as possible. We hope you’ll stop by to experience the wonderful vibe and great entertainment on offer. |

Upcoming events in George and the Garden Route |
| April sees a number of great events taking place in George and surrounding Garden Route areas. The first is the Klein Karoo National Arts Festival, which is currently in full swing and ends on the 9th April 2011. This beloved Afrikaans arts and culture festival in Oudtshoorn is a highlight on the Garden Route calendar, and for those who have not yet experienced it, it’s well worth attending. In fact, the festival attracts growing numbers of attendees each year, many of whom are return visitors. |
| Next up is the Sedgefield Slow Festival, which celebrates the outdoors, fantastic food and all things wholesome and good. The line-up includes outdoor events such as bowls, mountain-biking and sandcastle-building, a fun dog show, and of course, a host of sumptuous cuisine for every taste. The Sedgefield Slow Festival kicks off on 23 April and runs until the 25th. |
| Hot on the heels of the Sedgefield Slow Festival is the Pink Loerie Mardi Gras, a fabulous celebration of gay pride and culture, which takes place from 24 April – 1 May 2011 in Knysna. Hailed as South Africa’s “gayest town”, Knysna is set to swarm with revellers from all over South Africa and abroad, as non-stop entertainment whips the crowd into a frenzy. It’s a highlight on the international gay calendar and not to be missed! |
Next month, the World Corporate Golf Challenge Finals will be hosted at the
world-class Simola Golf and Country Estate in Knysna, a course designed by Jack Nicklaus. The event is the largest corporate golf tournament in the world, and willtake place from 3-8 May 2011. Currently, 22 countries participate in the event, which has previously been held in premier destinations around the world including Jamaica, Malaysia, Mauritius and Spain. |
